Peter McVerry Trust statement on the Residential Rental Strategy
For Immediate Release
Kildare must be designated a rent pressure zone
The housing and homeless charity Peter McVerry Trust has called on the Minister for Housing to immediately designate Kildare as a Rent Pressure Zone. The call was made today following the publication of the Residential Rental Strategy by Minister Simon Coveney.
Pat Doyle, CEO of Peter McVerry Trust, said, “Through our work in Kildare, we see huge pressure on the rental system with rents on par with Dublin rents in many towns.
“The last report from the website Daft.ie recorded a 13.4% annual increase in rents in Kildare, one of the fastest growing rates in the country. As Dublin becomes less and less affordable, more people will be moving out to slightly cheaper accommodation in Kildare. This means more people will be competing for limited properties and landlords will also be able to push up the prices of properties coming onto the market even further.”
“In order to offer some stability we need to see Kildare designated as a RPZ area with clear parameters for landlords to operate within. Without those, it will be incredibly difficult for people in homelessness to secure new accommodation, and potentially push many more individuals and families into homelessness.”
