Peter McVerry Trust believes that the right to a home should be enshrined in the Constitution of Ireland. This right was also recommended by the Constitutional Convention in February of 2014 and follows that which is contained in Article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
1. The States Parties to the present Covenant recognise the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions. The States Parties will take appropriate steps to ensure the realisation of this right, recognising to this effect the essential importance of international co-operation based on free consent.
The right to housing is also a central principle of the Housing First Model, the method of housing an individual and then providing wraparound supports practised by Peter McVerry Trust.
