Peter McVerry Trust has welcomed the launch of the Homelessness Policy Statement by Minister Jan O’Sullivan this morning in Dublin.
Speaking at the event Pat Doyle, CEO of Peter McVerry Trust said “We welcome this new policy statement by the Minister and look forward to working closely with the high level oversight committee.”
“In particular we welcome the commitment to ending long term homelessness by 2016 through a housing led approach. We also support the emphasis on a strong prevention strategy to decrease the number of people experiencing homelessness for the first time, at present we have around 8 people a day presenting as homeless in Dublin alone.”
“I raised with the Minister the need to ensure good cooperation between her Department and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs as they will be releasing a review of youth homelessness later this year. It is not acceptable that young homeless people end up in adult services once they turn 18 and this needs to be addressed by both Departments. ”
