The Open Access Service, is run by Peter McVerry. It is the first point of contact for many homeless young people with the Peter McVerry Trust, especially those leaving institutions, many of whom would have first met Fr McVerry through his ongoing in-reach work in Irish prisons. Based in Sherrard Street, this drop-in centre offers ongoing support, advice and advocacy for those out of home.
Peter McVerry Trust Streets to Home Service provides information, advice and direct support to young persons principally in the form of a staffed drop-in service, but also by way of outreach and prison in-reach. The service advocates for and supports marginalised young homeless people. It demonstrates Peter McVerry Trust’s experience in engaging with young persons who require significant support to progress towards independent living. The service, co-located with the Open Access Service, was established in 2008. Service delivery is underpinned by a harm reduction approach.
In October 2015, Peter McVerry Trust opened Ireland’s only dedicated youth cafe for young people in homelessness. The cafe operates day time and evening opening hours for people in or at risk of homelessness. The service provides a welcoming and positive space for people to access food, IT, laundry, storage and shower facilities as well as receiving support from Peter McVerry Trust staff on site.
