My experiences volunteering with Peter McVerry Trust through EVS
With support from Léargas, Peter McVerry Trust participates in the European Voluntary Service (EVS), which is part of the Erasmus+ programme. This scheme gives young people the chance to learn through full-time voluntary work in a foreign country within or outside the EU.
One of our volunteers, Karolina, writes about her experience with Peter McVerry Trust.
“Hi, my name is Karolina and I am from the Czech Republic. I guess most people know Prague, but I am from the country’s second-largest city: Brno.
“I spent six months with Peter McVerry Trust in Dublin. Since I have Master’s degree in Media and Communication and my studies are not related to social work at all, everyone kept asking me why I chose this EVS project. My answer is that I wanted to gain new experiences and learn about the homelessness and drug addiction field – that’s why I decided to join this EVS programme.
“I worked in different services – the drop-in centre, Housing with Supports and residential services. I really enjoyed all of them, they were all very different and taught me different things, but I think I enjoyed the drop-in centre the most. I had the opportunity to talk to many participants and got along with the staff very well.
“Moreover, I absolutely fell in love with Dublin, it’s become my number one favourite European city and I am definitely coming back as soon as possible!”
