The first family hub in Kildare was formally opened by Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy, in Athy on Friday. The new service, which is operated by Peter McVerry Trust in partnership with Kildare County Council, will provide short term emergency accommodation for up to 7 homeless families.
Speaking at the opening of the new service Peter McVerry Trust’s CEO Pat Doyle said “This hub is an important improvement in the quality of emergency accommodation for homeless families in Kildare. They offer much better quality accommodation than a hotel or B&B and each family will have a dedicated key worker to help them during their stay.”
“This family hub in Athy will offer families a safe and secure space. Each family will have their own self-contained bedroom and living room units and share a kitchen and laundry facilities with one other family. We have put in place children’s play areas and the site offers residents access to large private garden space as well.”
Chief Executive of Kildare County Council Peter Carey said “It is great to see this facility being delivered in the county, which is the outcome of a positive approach through partnership with Peter McVerry Trust. In recent years the instances of homelessness in Co Kildare have increased. It is acknowledged that the long-term solution to the current homelessness issue is to increase supply of homes, however, in the interim there is a need for appropriate emergency/transition accommodation, particularly for families. Family Hubs are a new model of accommodation for families experiencing homelessness, designed as a better alternative to commercial hotels and B&Bs. An important facet of a family hub is the wrap-around services provided, in this case by Peter McVerry Trust, to help families be in a better position to move into their own homes.”
Pathways to Housing
Mr Doyle said that Peter McVerry Trust would make every effort to re-house families as quickly as possible. “It is critical that we work to get families back into their own homes as quickly as possible. Peter McVerry Trust operates a dedicated team of accommodation finders who help identify and secure housing for people in homelessness. That team will be making every effort to find suitable homes for families who end up accessing this new family hub.”
