Facts and Figures
Information on homelessness in Ireland

This page provides statistical information on homelessness in Ireland as well as information Peter McVerry Trust’s services.

Over 14,00 unique individuals were supported by Peter McVerry Trust in 2023, and the charity was active in 28 of the 31 Local Authorities across Ireland.

The majority of those currently residing our emergency accommodation are men accessing Supported Temporary Accommodation (STA). Places are prioritised for those over 18 years of age who are homeless and have complex low-threshold needs. We also offer services for families, young people under the age of 18 and those ageing out of State care, addiction and recovery, and Housing With Supports.

An STA service is modelled on a six month placement. Unfortunately, due to the housing and homeless emergency people are spending longer than six months in homelessness. Learn more about our homeless services here.

Latest Homeless Figures

The number of people accessing State-funded emergency accommodation as of February 2024 is 13,841, according to figures published by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

This figure does not include people sleeping rough, people couch surfing, homeless people in hospitals and prisons, those in Direct provision centres, and homeless households in Domestic Violence refugees. These people are not included in the regular monthly homeless figures as they are not accessing emergency homeless accommodation funded through Section 10 of the Housing Act.
